The act of painting these very painful scenes gave me solace. Working in Michigan while thinking of the city where I once lived and still love, my seemingly distant view of events forced on me a global perspective. I learned, for instance, that Michigan has one of the largest Arab American communities in the county. Not knowing that simple fact seems to be a symptom of all that needs to be learned about this new world.
