Description

This Mural was made by 36 of my Art students in grades 6-8.  None of these students were born when 9/11 took place.  My lesson began with video clips of 9/11 attacks and the aftermath.  We had discussions that included sense of security, terrorism (domestic/foreign), emotions, stress, anxiety, safety, World Trade Center, Ground Zero, First responders, patriotism and the impact that terrorism create to help students better understand the circumstances. Students were then directed to use their sketchbooks to draw ideas for individual pieces that would make up a mural expressing their emotions on the 9/11 attack. Their ideas were then transferred to wooden plaques in the shape of the US and then designated a spot on a large wooden board that has the US flag painted behind it.

This project was chosen as a winner for the 9/11 Annual Teacher Award, 2020.
