Description

“Survived” pastel on paper 14X20” image. This painting was started in 2001 and finished in 2020.
The images of the architecture haunted me, I created small sculptures, did sketches and finally started working on a pastel painting. Each year I would try to work on this piece. I came to NY and was overwhelmed emotionally. I lived in MD and had connections to the Pentagon. I had been in PA just prior to the 11th. How do I connected all these images in one work?
Seeing the Survivor Tree hit home as I had added a tree to my painting as it represented a connection with life. I changed the tree to be more like the Survivor Tree, included architecture studies from NY And VA. Added the flight numbers from all four planes. It took me 19 years but it is done and now I can share it with the world, letting it go and learning each day how to survive.
